European Parliament Study Sees Severe Skills Mismatches in ICT Sector

EP logoA recent European Parliament study gives an overview of labour shortages in Europe and possible measures to counter them. It reveals that there is currently no overall labour shortage in the EU, but specific shortages, especially skill related shortages occur across Member States. Throughout Europe there is some consistency when it comes to occupational groups with shortages, notably in engineering and ICT professions.

The study says that an important source of skill mismatches is the discrepancy between the fields of study that students choose, or are able to choose, and the type of qualifications that employers demand. This phenomenon is known as horizontal mismatch and is particularly severe in sectors such as ICT and engineering. It also identifies the ICT sector as one experiencing a strong gender imbalance.
