Launch of Next Internet Protocol IPv6

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) was formally launched worldwide on 6 June with the support of the European Commission. The implementation of IPv6 is a key action of the Digital Agenda for Europe in order to upgrade the existing Internet infrastructure and to safeguard the development of new online services and applications. IPv6 will provide a virtually unlimited number of IP addresses as well as higher security levels. The new protocol should also provide innovation opportunities for new Internet applications and services. However the deployment of IPv6 is costly and therefore IPv6 and IPv4, the current protocol in place, will run in parallel until transition mechanisms allowing the complete replacement of IPv4 are in place.
