European Commission Reacts to High Increase of Cyber Attacks

In line with the Digital Agenda for Europe, the European Commission recently established a preliminary Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). The function of a CERT is to prevent any threats of cyber attacks. The European preliminary team will conduct preparatory work ahead of the creation of a full-scale CERT for all EU institutions.

In the last few years the number of cyber attacks on public administration servers has greatly increased, even against EU institutions, bodies and agencies. To react to this situation, the European Commission is now also requesting Member States to create national CERTs, which could then liaise with the European preliminary team by 2012.
