98% of Internet Traffic Not Ready for IPv6

On the occasion of World IPv6 Day, which was celebrated on June 8, the Europa website was made accessible for Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) users. According to the European Commission, which so far has invested more than €100 million in IPv6-related research and activities, this upgrade should encourage IT manufacturers to increase the production of IPv6 compatible devices.

As the last available IPv4 addresses were assigned in February 2011, IPv6 was introduced to allocate more internet space, now resulting in an unlimited number of new Internet addresses. However, the introduction of the new protocol now faces challenges due to the current Internet infrastructure: only 2% of all Internet traffic is actually compatible with IPv6, meaning further efforts are needed to upgrade the entire Internet architecture.
