EU2020: Ten-Year Strategy to Enhance Vocational Education and Training in Europe

Education Ministers from over 30 European countries and representatives of employers and unions recently met in Bruges, Belgium to pledge their support for the European Commission’s plan to enhance the quality of vocational education and training in Europe. The “Bruges Communiqué” plans to:

  • Maximize access to lifelong learning and make routes into education and training more open and flexible
  • Ensure higher quality courses, providing the right skills for specific jobs
  • Provide more inclusion and access for disadvantaged people
  • Promote creative, innovative and entrepreneurial thinking

The first phase of this strategy from 2011 – 2014 calls on countries to, among other activities, review the use of incentives, rights and obligations to encourage more people to take up training and launch communication strategies to highlight the benefits of vocational training.
