Interview with Anna Voriskova – 2010 ‘CEPIS - Women in ICT’ award winner

av_laptopThis year CEPIS launched its first ever ‘Women in ICT’ award at the closing event of European e-Skills Week 2010, in March. The ‘CEPIS - Digital Competence Women’ award was won by a 14 - year old girl from the Czech Republic, Anna Voriskova. With CEPIS sponsorship in the form of an educational grant worth €1000, Anna was able to participate in an intensive, week-long, ICT-related course in her home country, where she learned new computer skills in her chosen field of graphic design. With the additional benefit of her own laptop, Anna will also be able to apply her new-found skills to further develop her self-created website, www.folmici.cz. As a result of this experience Anna plans to pursue a career related to digital graphics and she believes that this CEPIS award is ‘simply fantastic’ in attracting more young women to ICT careers.

With the kind help of Ms. Štěpánková, President of the Czech Society for Cybernetics and Informatics, the following interview relates Anna’s experience with the award and its impact upon her life.

Can you explain why and how you started your website?

Originally, I used to publish my comics strip called Folmíci (in English, “The Folmies”, the name of the group of students who are characters in the comic strip) on the blog www.folmici.blog.cz, that was founded in the summer of 2008. 18 months later, we (me and my mom) came to the conclusion that it could be useful to move the blog to my own domain. Thus my first own website http://www.folmici.cz was started.

With your CEPIS prize towards ICT-related education, what course did you take and how do you think this will help you?

I am interested in computer graphics. That is why I chose an intensive “Graphic design” course which lasted one week and offered a lot of practical training sessions. I have enjoyed it very much and I believe, I have gained a lot of new skills there.

What skills did you learn during the course?

I learned how to work with Adobe software and with Adobe Illustrator, which was the most interesting to me. The course introduced me to vector graphics – an attractive concept which was new to me and which I like to use now too. Moreover, I worked a bit with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign too. We learned really a lot of skills and I am glad to have mastered them.

How has this CEPIS-sponsored experience influenced your career choice in the future?

Thanks to CEPIS for funding my course, I have learned a lot of new skills that I find very useful. With these skills, I can work in a more professional way. Currently, I think my career will be related to computer graphics.

As a result of this award and course are you more likely to choose a career in ICT?

As I have said, the career of graphic designer seems to be the right choice for me.

Finally, CEPIS believes it is very important to encourage girls like you to pursue a career in IT. What do you think of this CEPIS award programme?

I think it is simply fantastic that CEPIS supports girls in ICT. The world is full of men who are interested in ICT. All over there are some women too but it is difficult to spot them. Thanks to CEPIS, more girls can be attracted to using computer technology.
