European Researchers can now Access Processing Power of 200,000 Desktop PCs

In line with the Digital Agenda, the European Commission-funded European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) will allow EU researchers to have sustainable and continuous access to the combined processing power of over 200,000 desktop computers.

The Commission is contributing €25 million over four years to the EGI-InSPIRE project to link the processing capacity of these desktop computers when they would otherwise be idle. Researchers can then use the processing power to tackle complex problems in the environment, energy or health. Further, the EGI will allow researchers from more than 30 European countries to work on the same problem together.
