EIT Launches first KICs for European Innovation

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) recently launched its first three Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs) to contribute to the development of innovation needed for a successful EU2020 strategy.

A KIC is a community of excellence gathering higher education institutions, research bodies and businesses to work together in learning and creating ideas. The KICs will focus on climate change, sustainable energy and the future of the information and communication society. Climate-KIC, KIC-InnoEnergy and EIT ICT Labs will be ‘communities' of innovation and transformation across cities in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France, the Benelux, Spain, Poland, Finland and Sweden.

The results of these ‘innovation hotspots' are expected to transform Europe into a successful knowledge economy and society. The EIT hopes that the KICs will be fully generated by mid-2010.
