Global Breakthrough for Internet Governance, US-Owned ICANN Goes International

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has recently announced reforms that answer the European Commission’s calls for more open and accountable global governance. The proposed changes include a complete reform of ICANN on a global scale. Specific issues to be addressed include:

  • The Internet is a global phenomenon and needs to be represented in the same way by such an important organisation as ICANN.
  • Evaluation of ICANN will be performed periodically by panels from different governments and public authorities on a global scale, in relation to ICANN’s external responsibilities.

The reform of ICANN is perceived in the EU as evidence that the US acknowledges and supports the Commission’s continuing mission in improving global internet governance.
