EU Calls on ICT Industry to Reduce Carbon Footprint

The EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, Viviane Reding recently posted a video message on her website, calling on the ICT industry to make a greater effort to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% as early as 2015 and set trends for the reduction of emissions produced by the wider economy.

Commissioner Reding mentioned that although the EU is one of the world’s leading economies in the use of green technologies, the current economic downturn and the challenges of climate change necessitate a stronger commitment to enhance the use of energy-saving technologies. The ICT sector has been identified as a potential leader in reducing carbon footprints, as it can positively impact other sectors where ICT-enabled technologies are used, such as construction and transportation.

The EC has also launched a public online consultation on future policy instruments which could be adopted to stimulate the use of ICTs for improving energy efficiency.
