Commissioner Reding Promises More than 2 Billion in Funding for ICT Research

Speaking at the IST 2008 event in Lyon, Commissioner Reding stressed the importance of continuing ICT research in uncertain economic times and unveiled details of EU funding for the next wave of ICT projects amounting to over 2 billion over the next 18 months.

Noting that Europe’s public investment in ICT R&D represents only 40% of the US level, Commissioner Reding, called on Member States to match the EU’s 20% increase in ICT research funding.

In a preview of a Communication to be put forward in February, Mrs Reding outlined elements, such as increasing the intensity of ICT research and unlocking innovative potential by unblocking market fragmentation, which she considers essential in establishing Europe as the world leader in ICT research and innovation.
